Using Legacy PCMCIA Modem Cards on New Systems Without a PCMCIA Port

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Sam_Garfield]Sam Garfield Computer manufacturers have left many people in the dark by updating their computers to only include express card expansion ports. Although this is a new and better technology, people with legacy PCMCIA cards are left out in the rain without a way to use those cards. These are primarily modem adapter cards like those you would get from a cell phone provider. These cards allow mobile Internet access from anywhere you can get a cell phone signal. PCMCIA card present a special problem to people who have upgraded to new computers. There are two reasons for this: Cost of the card and availability of alternative cards that use express card technology. These cards are often very expensive. Buying them from a cell phone company even requires you to often sign a contract for various terms of service. This makes upgrading to a new card expensive, and sometimes even impossible if you are no far enough along in your contract. Many of the new cards, although express card, do not offer any advantage over the old cards as far as speed or reliability - the form factor is the only thing that has changed. Even if you are able to afford an upgrade, and the plan with your service provider allows it, there may not even be an express card version of your modem card. Service providers have been slow to get this new technology out the door while the computer manufacturers have been falling all over themselves trying to add express card ports as a “feature.” Having a PCMCIA (also called cardbus) modem card and a new computer with only and express card port certainly presents a problem. So how is this problem silved? There are actually a few options out there that will get you rolling with mobile data in almost no time at all. Neither solution is perfect, but they both should work - at least until you are able to upgrade your modem card. The first solution is to use a USB to Cardbus adapter. The second solution is to put that express card port to work with a Express Card to PCMCIA adapter. Either one will work, but both have different advantages. First we will examine the USB to PCMCIA solution. USB is an obvious choice because it is so ubiquitous. Almost any PC you find will have at least a few USB ports. That makes this a great solution for ultimate compatibility. The other advantage of a USB adapter is that you can use your modem card on a desktop computer. This can come in handy in various situations. The USB adapter does have a few drawbacks. Like any modem adapter card, it is only compatible with certain wireless modem cards. Fortunately, all the major cards that are most popular are covered. You will most likely be okay with the card you have, but its a good idea to double check the compatibility list for a given card just to make sure. The other drawback is that a USB to PCMCIA adapter is more expensive than the alternative. They will set you back around $200, a bit more than the next alternative we will discuss. Of course, for someone who absolutely needs a solution, the price isnt too bad - although comparable to the price of a brand new card. The next solution is to use the new express card slot for an Express Card to PCMCIA adapter. This is generally a good idea since the one technology is meant to take over the other. You are basically using the old format card in the new format slot. These adapters tend to be a little bit cheaper - around $100, but do not offer the same compatibility as a USB adapter. If you want to use the card in a desktop computer, for example, you will need to purchase a PCI express card adapter. Still, this should work on any new computer with an express card slot. This makes it a great solution for mobile warriors who need data wherever they go but dont need a mobile data card for anything else. As with a USB to PCMCIA adapter, the Express card adapter is only compatible with certain modem cards. Again, check compatibility on the card you intend to buy but most cards should be covered without a problem. One last solution you might want to consider is a PCMCIA PCI card for your desktop computer. This isnt the best solution for most people as these types of modem cards are typically used in notebook computers, but if you need a card to work in your desktop computer, this solution might be for you. These cards are generally inexpensive (~$20 and up depending on what exactly you need). A PCMCIA PCI Card will also be compatible with virtually any modem card you throw at it, making this solution a good fit if you have multiple cards or cards that are not compatible with a USB or Express Card adapter. Of course, if you dont want to mess with an adapter, you will just have to wait until your cell contract runs out or until your service provider offers and allows you to purchase an upgraded express-format card. This may be your best bet if you do not absolutely need mobile data and can get by for a year or so without it. Whichever solution you decide to use, you will be up and running with mobile data in no time. Staying connected is an important part of many peoples daily lives and jobs, so it is important to make sure the technology designed to allow us to be connected works. Not the same solution will work for everyone, but there is a solution out there that will work for you. Sam Garfield is a technolgy expert and mobile communcations guru. The Trusted Motorola Cell Phone

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Christopher_Luck]Christopher Luck Everyone is making cell phones these days. Any company thats ever had anything to do with electronics has jumped on the bandwagon in the last decade and introduced a line of cell phones. While Motorola cell phones have been around since day one, the coming years are going to be seeing phones from every one else hitting the market. Not just those electronics companies, but now even big retailers that just want to put their name behind this kind of product are starting to appear with phones. Since the beginning of the technology though, Motorola cell phones have been trusted by consumers as being amongst the best. While the company formed over seventy five years ago, long before wireless communication was even dreamed of, they placed themselves on the forefront of the technology to be prepared for the time when the market was ripe. Almost at the same moment pagers and cell phones became common place amongst business people it was Motorola pagers and Motorola cell phones that they were using. Then when cell phones moved into the general consumer market it was still the Motorola cell phone everyone was choosing. An industry sales leader for a long time, its cell phone division is what drove the company to becoming a Fortune 100 company. There they didnt at all let up. With principles dictating quality and ever innovative products Motorola is always placing itself on the edge of the businesss future. The first motorola cell phone appeared in 1983. As many remember, these were huge clunky devises; almost comical by todays standards. The company, however, continued to lead the way in the ever improving designs until the present days sleek phones came to be. Now their cell phones are anything from tiny handhelds to large screen flip phones. They include cameras, video recorders and mp3 playback. Complimenting their phones Motorola has also been a leader in offering innovative accessories. By allowing consumers to plug their phones directly into cars for recharging or into computers for data sharing, Motorola cell phones have been able to offer industry leading services often long before the competition. With the inclusion of Bluetooth technology on their products, consumers can now communicate remotely with their wireless devices. Now headsets and other hands free devices offered through the company and its partners enable people to have an easier and even safer experience with their cell phones. To reaffirm its commitment to leading edge innovation the Motorola cell phone division has introduced something altogether unique in time for the holiday season. Partnering with Oakley, they have together introduced a Bluetooth device that makes Motorola cell phone users amongst the coolest talkers out there. The new Motorola [http://www.tahomatimes.com/category/technology-reviews]cell phone accessory, called Razwire, is a headset and microphone built into an ultralight pair of Oakley sunglasses. Bluetooth enabled, it allows someone to make a call and talk to anyone without holding the phone or having the awkward feel of a traditional headset. Oil Change Business and Small Town Populations and Older Demographics

By Lance Winslow If you live in a small town of older retirees and want to start an oil change business one has to wonder will it make money? Should you start a mobile oil change business or a fixed site oil change business? Recently this question came up and someone in New Hampshire states; I live in a small town with only 8,000 people and mostly retired folks and they have to drive 60 miles to get an oil change. Would it be viable to start one here? Well 8,000 at .7 cars per person is 6400 cars or so. Remember retired communities have fewer cars and they drive a lot less due to age. But Upper End retirees from my experience with Sun City in Sacramento, Phoenix, Orange County, Palm Desert CA, etc. tell me that they are more apt to take care of their cars you see? Yet in those areas one would not have to drive 60 miles for an oil change. A small population may not provide the Return on Investment for the property and a building, however it might? Mobile Auto Services in New Hampshire have regional weather issues for mobile services and under 20 degrees or snow it is somewhat unfeasible without hardship of some kind. Since there are people there to will be other service businesses and smaller fleets, 3-10 vehicles, heating and air, plumbing, you know the usual, they too make good customers. If your town has some nice downtown area you might be able to get some Economic Redevelopment Loans, SBA assist and plus Oil Company Loans at no interest or 30K grants with personal pledge to buy X amount of oil and use their brand 5-7 years? You might make a location work, but go inexpensive and go modular if possible, retro fit an old building that way. Use your used oil to heat the place, you could save costs and make that work. If you go mobile remember the smaller markets mean you need get in inexpensively, but with a couple of fleets in nearby cities you could also have those every three months say 60 mile radius, think in terms of each weak going a different direction like a BMX Bicycle wheel? In your scenario used oil is also an issue and your state might have cradle to grave used oil environmental policies but if not you could give your used motor oil to other shops for heating to save them money and you might find yourself with lower costs over all. Inventory is an issue too, but as you probably have seen Lincoln Continental filters will be a standard filter you will need? So with older retirees often inventory is easier too and this is a good thing. Perhaps you will consider all this in 2006 if you are going to open an Oil Change Business in a Small Town with a small populations and Older Demographics. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. How to Market Like Warren Buffett Through the Eyes of An Investor.

By Paul Speziale Lets take a break for a minute from the flashy TV ads and the phone calls at dinner time asking us to change long distance plans. Lets put away and forget everything we know about marketing just for a second, just long enough to see it from another angle, because in a minute I want to show you how to look at marketing and investing that will change your life forever. To start, how do we define the two terms: marketing and investing? Well, investing is defined as to commit something (usually money) in order to obtain a financial return. But the word is based from the word investire in Latin, which means to clothe, or to cover, gain control of something. So investing is all about gaining control over something in order to obtain a return correct? Okay, now lets examine what marketing means. Marketing is defined as the total of activities involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing, and selling. But why on earth would someone want to transfer their goods to a consumer? To make money, to make a profit and to grow larger as a business thats why. At least, thats how it is in a capitalistic society, which I am presupposing. So, can you see how the two concepts are linked? Can you see how the very act of marketing is also investing? Now, lets take a page out of the book of the most famous and ridiculously rich investor, Warren Buffett. You know him; he is the king of marketing. He above everyone else, understands how investing and marketing are linked. Whats important about his style of investing is that he doesnt hold the charts, graphs, market capitalization, and the other technical business statistics with the same importance as does Wall Street. In fact, he snubs Wall Street by looking at the fundamentals of the marketing aspects of a business. Lets examine them; there are only 3 real big ones: 1) He understands that you shouldnt fight the market. If people all of a sudden wanted Pogo Sticks instead of Coca-Cola, then he would look at that company. He looks for winners and products that market must have. 2) He understands that in order to protect a future investment, the product must have a high profit margin in other words, it cannot have a lot (or any) competition. He calls this a consumer monopoly. A product that can ride through the ups and downs of a roller coaster economy and still retain healthy margins. 3) He understands consumables. He wants to know that a consumer of that product will be buying that product again and again. That is the secret, he understands, to protecting his investment. A product that is a one time sale, will force the company to spend all their efforts on pursuing new customers. An effort, that is not only extremely costly, but takes away from their ability to innovate. He picks the companies with those 3 attributes and waits for the price to go low so he can get a great return on investment. So what can we learn about Warren Buffets marketing approach to investing? A lot. If you are in business: Look at your own business and see if you can apply his 3 basic fundamentals to your business. Come up with creative ways to increase your profit margin and test them out, before you commit. If you are an investor: Look at the companies you want to buy or already have bought. Will they provide you the return you want? Does their business model contain any of those three fundamentals? If not, perhaps they might be worth re-examining. While Warren is unusual in that he made so much money, his principles are sound. If you are looking out for the long term then investing and marketing become clearly linked together. Because with both of them, you expect an outcome that takes you further ahead compared to where you were yesterday. Benefits of Carotene (Beta Carotene) as a Dietary Supplement

By Joyce Dietzel The beta-carotene is in fact famous for the help it gives to human’s body. One of the most known claims for beta-carotene is that it prevents cancer and heart disease and can boost our immune system. Beta Carotene is plentiful in vegetables and fruits. The 600 carotenoids are important for our health and is found in yellow, red, and deep green vegetables and fruits. Studies shows however that taking supplements for a long duration may in fact cause harm, such as the damage to our liver or increased risk of cancer which can determined only by long, large, well-designed studies. Large amount of Beta Carotene however can turn your skin slightly yellow or orange-, which is in fact harmless. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant. Antioxidants help deactivate free radicals, unstable molecules that are by products of cells “burning” oxygen for energy. Free radicals can in fact damage the basic structure of cells and therefore leading to chronic diseases, such as cancer and heart diseases. In addition, it can accelerate the aging process. However, smokers should not take this the pill of beta-carotene because studies show that smokers have an increase of the risk of lung cancer when they take beta-carotene pills. According to studies, taking Beta Carotene even not on high dose actually has a higher rate of developing lung cancer and higher mortality rate than those taking a placebo. However, the risk is only for smokers who smoked more than a pack per day and who drank more than the average amount of alcohol. Therefore, the moral lesson here is: Do not think that any supplements “can’t hurt, might help” or that antioxidants are always beneficial. There is a delicate balance of antioxidants and free radicals in our body. Smoking was a complicating factor with beta carotene but who knows what factor such as sun exposure, alcohol, medication, intense exercise might make supplement X< Y and Z dangerous? Don’t Smoke Don’t take Beta Carotene Pills if you smoke or if you are a former smoker, or if you are a heavy drinker. Eat a lot of fruits and vitamins- Even if you do not smoke, it is much better to obtain beta-carotene from foods not from the pills. There are no any evidence that beta carotene in foods can cause any danger Beta Carotene is one of the orange dyes that are found in most green leaves and in carrots. Beta Carotene is a member of family of molecules called carotenoides. Beta Carotene is made up of eight isoprene units, which are cyclised at each end. Beta Carotene is the pigment that gives carrots, sweet potatoes and other yellow vegetables their yellow coloring. Beta Carotene is also used as a colorant in margarine because the absence of it would only make margarine white. Almost all beta-carotene in supplements are synthetic consisting of only one molecule that is called all Trans beta-carotene. Natural beta-carotene found in foods is made up of two molecules - all Trans beta-carotene and 9-cis-beta-carotene. Beta Carotene s the most potent precursor to vitamin A, but its conversion to vitamin A in the body is limited by a feedback system. Beta-carotene has two roles in our body. It can indeed be converted into vitamin A if the body needs more of the vitamin. In addition, beta-carotene acts as antioxidants, which protect cells from damage caused by harmful free radicals. The richest sources of beta carotene are yellow, orange, and green leafy fruits and vegetables such as carrots, spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli, cantaloupe, and winter squash to name a few. The more intense the green, yellow or orange color is, the more beta-carotene it possess. Cooking makes it easier for beta-carotene to be fully too absorbed by the body does not destroy beta Carotene. Research shows that diets that are low in beta-carotene and carotenoids can increase the body vulnerability to damage from free radicals. As a result, long-term diets with low in beta-carotene may increase tissue damage from free radical activity and increase risk of chronic disease and cancer. Low in beta-carotene may also lead to the reduction of the effectiveness of the immune system. http://www.for-your-vitamins.com/ Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Joyce_Dietzel http://EzineArticles.com/?Benefits-of-Carotene-(Beta-Carotene)-as-a-Dietary-Supplement&id=183128 where can i buy cheap viagra uk pharmacies cheap viagra viagra levitra cialis pharmacist prescription drug order viagra now

Commercialisation of Higher Education in South Africa

By Lizl Steynberg Introduction and Literature Review South African education policies place priority on addressing historical education imbalances, but should also be sensitive to the demands of an ever-increasing global knowledge-driven environment. The educational system cannot be dominated by the needs of the domestic educational system of South Africa ignoring the trends exerted by the global world (OEDC Annual Report, 2004:44). Higher education in South Africa should realize that they operate and function in a knowledge-driven global environment in which both domestic and foreign students demand access to the best quality education at the best reputable institutions of higher education in the world. In this regard, most definitions of internationalization of higher education include the following: Internationalisation is a process that prepares the community for successful participation in an increasingly interdependent world The process infuse all facets of the post-secondary education system, fostering global understanding and developing skills for effective living and working in a diverse world (Francis, 1993 cited by Patrick, 1997). The position of higher education in South Africa should be evaluated considering the re-integration of South Africa into the global community. South Africa was rapidly re-integrated into the world community by obtaining almost immediate membership of influential international organisations after 1994. Kishun (1998:59) indicated that South Africa became a member of among others the following international institutions: United Nations; Organisation of African Unity; Commonwealth; International Olympic Committee; Federation of International Football Associations; and Lome Convention. Integration of influential international institutions is a necessary but not sufficient pre-condition for internationalization of higher education. Sustainable internationalization should be closely aligned to the emerging global trends and events in the education sector. An analysis of the basis on which internationalization of higher education occurs is needed as well as the benefits of the internationalization process. This research is conducted against this background. Problem Statement Whilst South Africa is in a process of transition regarding higher education to address the imbalances of the past, the question arises whether the South African educational sector is able to compete in the global economy which regard knowledge as a commercialised commodity. Methodology A sample size of 781 respondents from six institutions of higher education in South Africa was selected. Senior students were randomly selected using the convenience sampling technique. A semi-structured questionnaire was developed to measure the perceived competitive profile of institutions of higher education in South Africa. The questionnaire constitutes five measuring foci, namely: Section A: Institutional information regarding the location where the respondent is enrolled. Section B: Biographical information in terms of gender, type of student and country of origin. Section C: Decision criteria used to select an institution of higher education. Section D: Four competitive dimensions of higher education institutions, including strategic competitiveness, institutional competitiveness, product competitiveness, and tactical competitiveness. Section E: Open-ended questions, aimed to identify the reasons why respondents choose a specific institution of higher education, their opinion on the institutions competitive reputation, and the factors that may influence the international competitiveness of the particular institution. The data was transformed into two opposite categories, namely those who agreed with the statements and those who disagreed, enabling the researchers to derive a hypothesized agreement-disagreement distribution. Those who neither agreed nor disagreed were allocated to the disagreement group set giving and expected disagreement response set of 57% (p=0.57) and an agreement response set of 43% (q=0.43). The Binomial test was employed to determine whether the observed distribution correspond with the hypothesized distribution using a significance test level of 0.05. Furthermore, the level of agreement or disagreement with the selected competitive statements and the extend of agreements between the respondents from the different institutions on the various statements were determined by executing four statistical procedures, namely: ANOVA to compare the means of respondents from the different institutions; determining how much of the perception variation could be accounted for by the influence of the different institutions of higher education; determining the averages for each strategic dimension to obtain an indication of the level of agreement with the competitive statements; and determining the standard deviations to obtain an indication of the extend to which consensus exists within the sample. Findings With regard to the strategic competitiveness of South African institutions of higher education to engage in a seamless network the respondents were of the opinion that South African institutions of higher education give low priority to attract foreign students, are not well known for attracting foreign students, are not actively involved in exchange programmes of students and lecturers, and do not have active engagements or agreements with other tertiary institutions, businesses and communities. On the issue of institutional competitiveness, the majority of respondents were of the opinion that institutions of higher education in South Africa have the ability to attract quality students, does not have an international student culture, offers qualifications that are internationally accepted, can claim international reputability on post-graduate level, offers competitive tuition fees, deliver research outputs that are internationally recognized, and are not easily accessible. In terms of product competitiveness the majority of respondents indicated that institutions of higher education in South Africa have active orientation programmes to familiarise foreign and domestic students with the institutions, provide safe and secure learning environments, provide leading information technology for academic growth and excellence, do not easily adapt to the needs and wants of students, and provide convenient service packages to students. With regard to tactical competitiveness institutions of higher education in South Africa have the ability to compile a diploma or degree offering that meets or exceeds international standards in terms of offering subject content of international standard, having internationally acclaimed staff, aggressively marketing its qualifications internationally, claiming international acceptable through-put, and having acceptable grant and loan schemes accessible to students. Conclusion and Recommendations The majority of respondents are in agreement that institutions of higher education in South Africa are able to compete internationally on the four competitive dimensions (strategic, institutional, tactical and product). Internationalisation requires that institutions of higher education in South Africa should emphasise a somewhat loosening of the relationship with Government, despite the paradoxical need to create new transformational bodies to address the imbalances of the past. Internationalisation of higher education implies that internationalised institutions operate on new super ordinate levels which has its own legal, administrative and revenue-raising powers. In terms of strategic direction institutions of higher education might consider at least one of the following internationalization approaches: Would-be internationalization: Applies to academics and institutions wanting to be involved in internationalization but facing problems in being considered on equal terms. Life or death internationalization: Countries, their academics and institutions, which view internationalization cooperation as indispensable for their status and role in the global world. Two areas: Academics and institutions have the option of striving for either more national or more international status and orientation. The academic field in which one is operating often determines this. Internationalisation by import: Countries and institutions that treat internationalization only as coming from outside, by hosting foreign students and publishing research. It should not represent a separate strategy towards internationalisation. References Kishun, R. 1998. Internationalization in South Africa. In The globalization of Higher Education. Scott, P. ed. The Bachelors Party

By Lesley-Ann Graham You’re about to be a married man. It’s your last few days, if not the last night of being free. All the boys are around to commiserate and celebrate the last night of being single! So they plan a night doing everything you’re going to miss once you say “I do”. They bring you to a place where you can drink ’til you can’t remember anything and have a woman (or women) to entertain you. Of course, this too is changing (thankfully, for the brides!) Some grooms don’t want to be debauched before their wedding. The new trend seems to be for the boys to go out and get physical like playing football and having some beers. Sometimes, the friends of the bride and groom even have the bridal shower and the bachelor party in the same place. They celebrate some portions separately, then just merge toward the end. This way the boys won’t have to sit through the giggling of the girls over the presents and dainities and they get to enjoy the food. Of course, you may still opt to go to a strip club instead of a poker game. You get the drinks and get to see naked women. Of course, naughty boys may try to send one of the naked women into a room with you. Be careful! This is dangerous territory. Think of the consequences before jumping in. If you do find yourself giving in, it does give you something to think of. It may be best to call off the wedding. After all, marriage is supposed to be forever. If you can’t be faithful and committed to your fiance now, better to call it off before you end in divorce. So he creates a wonderful world for himself, a kind of bubble. When a new person walks into his life, he is absolutely sure that the person is impressed by his charisma. 6. Can do without an OK from others The Alpha Man is very conscious that the world built by him is created for him, of him and by him. In that, he rules, he operates with his self-defined code of conduct, his own set moral values and lives exactly the way he wants to. The opinion of others, good or bad, hardly matter to him and he needs nobodys approval for running his life. 7. A natural risk taker The Alpha Man works to make all his dreams come true. Any life that ends in regret is something he wants to avoid at all costs. If you have dreamt it, reach it. Thats his aim. 8. Can be a good listener too Yes the Alpha Man is clever enough to know how to play his card, when and where. Can put his emotional side under harness when he wants to and can listen out a long story at times. For he knows the ones who shout and brag about themselves, are normally insecure, shallow people. Coming Up with Mulla for Your Plastic Surgery

By Ricardo Silva Plastic surgery is almost always an elective surgery unless there is an underlying medical reason. As such, your medical insurance is probably not going to cover it, which means you must. Coming Up with Mulla for Your Plastic Surgery Unless you can make some unique argument to your health insurance company, it is going to refuse any claim you submit related to plastic surgery. If you read the tiny boilerplate language in your health insurance policy, and it is tiny, you will find it only pays for medically necessary surgery. The terminology differs by policy, but the basic idea is you have to have a note from a doctor indicating the surgery is pivotal for your overall health. Feeling better about your appearance is not a medically necessary basis! Like most medical procedures, plastic surgery is not cheap. Simple botox injections can run a couple of hundred bucks, but most significant procedures are going to run a couple thousand dollars at a minimum. Simply put, you need to give some thought regarding paying for the procedures. The simplest way to handle the cost of paying for plastic surgery is to save up some money and pay in cash. Your surgeon will love you because cash is king, even in plastic surgery. Alternatively, you can also break out a credit card with a high limit and charge it. Ah, plastic paying for plastic surgery. Surely there is some metaphysical message there! In a capitalist economy, there is always a company looking for opportunities. In the world of plastic surgery, more than a few companies offer financing for your procedure. The financing is in the form of an unsecured loan. These lenders will finance all or part of the cost of the procedure, but you should pay close attention to the fine print. Interest rates can be similar to credit cards, which means you end up paying a lot more in the long term. Some physicians accept this form of payment while others do not because of limits put on the payment amount by the companies. Essentially, the companies demand the doctor take less than the normal fee, much as health insurance companies do with most medical professionals. Physicians hate these caps and some simply will not put up with it. Point being, make sure the surgeon in question accepts this form of payment before going through the application process. For most people, the best option for paying for plastic surgery is the old savings account. Since Americans are infamously bad savers, you may want to check out the other options available.
